Brother Cane is an American rock band originally from Birmingham, Alabama. Formed by singer/guitarist Damon Johnson and bassist Glenn Maxey in 1991, the group released three studio albums, several charting singles including three number 1’s and five top 10 hits.
The band found immediate success with the release of its self-titled debut album which delivered three singles: “Got No Shame”, “That Don’t Satisfy Me”, and “Hard Act To Follow”. “Got No Shame” reached #1 on the Mainstream Rock charts and garnered the band U.S. tours with Aerosmith, Robert Plant, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Brother Cane’s next album, Seeds, yielded another #1 track: the haunting and swampy “And Fools Shine On”. This hit led to a lengthy and successful tour in support of the mighty Van Halen. Their third and final album, Wishpool, brought the band their third #1 song, “I Lie In The Bed I Make”. After major personnel changes at the band’s label (Virgin Records) as well as a major shift in style at rock and alt radio formats, the band laid down their instruments and called it a day in 2000.
For the next 20 years Johnson’s resume’ as a journeyman sideman blossomed (John Waite, Alice Cooper, Thin Lizzy and more). In 2021, Johnson was asked to fill in for the legendary guitarist and founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gary Rossington (a position Johnson still holds today). While touring with Skynyrd, Johnson was pleasantly surprised at how many fans not only remembered Brother Cane, but shared their stories on how much the band and those songs meant to them. Inspired by these discussions, a meeting with original BC bassist Glenn Maxey quickly launched Brother Cane 2022 into motion.
Brother Cane plan to head back into the studio with longtime collaborator/producer Marti Frederiksen in the Spring of 2023, with plans for releasing new music as well as celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the release of their self-titled debut album.
This is great. I’ve been a Brother Cane fan for a long time. Any chance you’ll be touring the Northeast in 2023? Hershey, PA or Baltimore, MD would be great.
Big tour announcement coming tomorrow!
